FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ABOUT BYRDWATCHER

Q: Look at this thing! You must be nuts!

A: That's not a question.

Q: Okay, smart guy: Look at this thing! What are you, nuts?!

A: Uh, no, but I admit I may have gotten a bit carried away. When I started this thing in January of 1994, I envisioned it as a CD-ROM. I spent a lot of time on it, then I set it aside for almost a year. Eventually I decided it would be better suited to the World Wide Web, so I 'ported it to HTML. I figured Byrds fans might enjoy all the information I'd gathered and I would at least have something to show for all my effort.

Q: Does that mean you've given up on publishing this thing as a CD-ROM, or perhaps as a book?

A: No, I would be happy to talk with anyone in a position to publish ByrdWatcher in other media. You can reach me at byrds@ebni.com.

Q: Is ByrdWatcher an official Byrds site?

A: No, it isn't. Sony maintains an official Byrds site at http://www.music.sony.com/Music/Legacy/Byrds/index.html.

Q: Does the world really need another Byrds site?

A: Well, if Tori Amos has dozens of sites, the Byrds can handle one more. It's true, there are several really cool Byrds sites, all of which are listed in Byrd on a Wire. There will probably be more great sites down the road. But I started this project before any of those sites were up, and I felt like no one was taking the same approach to the Byrds that I had. I hope people enjoy ByrdWatcher as much as I've enjoyed the other Byrd sites on the Web. So far the other folks I've heard from with their own Byrd sites have been extremely gracious.

Q: Have you talked with any of the Byrds for this site?

A: David Crosby very kindly sat down with me for the lengthy interview posted elsewhere on this site. I also communicated by e-mail with Roger McGuinn and Crosby and by letter with Chris Hillman several years ago, when this project was a demo for a CD-ROM. I didn't hear back from Hillman, but McGuinn and Crosby were friendly and interested. Nothing ever came of it, as much because of my slow progress as for any other reason. I'm hoping they'll check it out and that if they like it, they'll be willing to do interviews, send me corrections, amplifications, tour schedules, and so on, as they have done with some other sites, Usenet groups, mailing lists, and zines. So Roger, David, Chris and anyone else with relevant information is invited to participate as early and often as they like.

Q: Why don't you have more (or any) pictures/tab chords/sound clips?

A: Well, for a number of reasons I feel constrained to take the law of copyright more seriously than most webmasters. Anything you see in ByrdWatcher is either created by me or here with the permission of the copyright holder. Luckily, lots of other folks out there are braver than me about such things, so you can find cool pictures, tablatures and sound clips on many other Byrds sites. If anyone out there is in a position to help secure permissions for pictures and so forth, please get in touch -- I'm eager to add more graphics to spice the place up. I also have a number of formal requests outstanding already, so with any luck I'll have at least some album covers up soon.

Q: Hey, I would like to advertise on ByrdWatcher. Do you take ads?

A: Yeah, this thing has cost me a small fortune already, especially if I assign a monetary value to my time! So anything that helps defray that cost I'm interested in. Get in touch at the above e-mail address if you're interested and we'll work something out. I am also interested in trading ad space with zines, webzines, etc.
