I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON HERE!:

HELP WITH BYRDWATCHER

If the ByrdWatcher Website is causing you scientific delirium madness, this Chapter will help you figure it all out. If there's something you think I should include here, let me know.

Browser Requirements

ByrdWatcher will work best with a browser that implements the HTML 3.2 standard. Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Explorer and NCSA Mosaic all have versions of their browser that implement 3.2 in both PC and Mac environments and these should work fine with ByrdWatcher. Let me know if they don't! If you have a browser that will not handle tables, this site will probably be a mess. Try a newer version of your browser. My goal is to make this site usable with as many different browsers as possible, including text-only browsers, so if yours is having a lot of trouble, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

Optimizing Your Browser for ByrdWatcher

To maximize your enjoyment of ByrdWatcher, go to your browser's preference section and check the boxes that allow a document to override your browser's pre-sets. That will ensure that your browser displays ByrdWatcher's background color, link colors and font sizes. You should be seeing white backgrounds, crimson text for unvisited links, green text for visited links, and text about 14 points in size. (For some reason Mosaic seems to reverse the link colors.)

Navigating ByrdWatcher

Throughout ByrdWatcher are many links. Most of these are within the site, but some of them are to other websites, mainly in the Chapter Byrd on a Wire: Internet Resources and throughout the Section Byrd-Related Musicians. Most browsers will identify the address of a link, so you can easily tell whether or not a link will take you outside ByrdWatcher. ByrdWatcher uses crimson text for unvisited links and green text for visited links.
On the Welcome Page is a directory of the site. As you can see there, the site is arranged in a hierarchy of Sections (e.g., "Band Members"), which are subdivided into Chapters (e.g., "Roger McGuinn"). Some Chapters are just one Page but many are more than one (e.g. "McGuinn Early Years," "McGuinn Solo Years," and so on).
At the top and bottom of every Page in this website you'll find a textual Navigation Bar linking to the other Sections in the Site, the other Chapters in the Section, and where appropriate, the other Pages in the Chapter. The current Section is in highlighted boldface; the rest are highlighted links, except for the current Page. Thus, you can always figure out where the current page fits in the site's organization by checking either of the Navigation Bars.
Clicking on any of the Sections in the Navigation Bars will take you to a special "Section Intro" with links to all the Chapters and Pages in that Section. Where necessary, some of the Section Intros also have detailed descriptions of the Pages in that Section.
As an alternative, you can always go to the Welcome Page from the Navigation Bar. The Welcome Page contains links to every Page in ByrdWatcher, so you're never more than two clicks away from your destination. My hope is that this navigation scheme will quickly become second nature and allow easy navigation whether you're just browsing or searching for a particular Page.
