James Carr Soul singer James Carr recorded some terrific soul singles for the Memphis label Goldwax. Carr was a particular favorite of Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman. The Flying Burrito Brothers covered Carr's best-known song, "Dark End of the Street," on The Gilded Palace of Sin (A&M, 1969). Even after Parsons left, the Burritos covered Carr -- Last of the Red Hot Burritos (A&M, 1972) features his song "Losing Game." Johnny Cash Years before the Byrds, Johnny Cash was mixing folk and rock into his country music. Gram Parsons thought so highly of Cash that he included two of his songs on the International Submarine Band album: "I Still Miss Someone" and "Folsom Prison Blues." Cash has recorded songs by Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, and Nick Lowe. Cash even cut a Glenn Danzig song on his terrific American Recordings (American, 1994) -- Cash's partially succesful attempt to enter the "adult alternative" market. The best overview of Cash's career is The Essential Johnny Cash (Columbia/Legacy, 1992). American maintains an official Johnny Cash website, and one Dr. Mellow has a nice unofficial Johnny Cash page. Rodney Crowell Rodney Crowell is a songwriter and singer who, much like Gram Parsons, leavens his country songs with rock and soul elements. Jackie deShannon Jackie DeShannon began her career as a writer of well-crafted pop songs in the early 1960s, writing hits for Brenda Lee, the Searchers and Marianne Faithfull. She was an early supporter of the Byrds, who thanked her by covering her tune "Don't Doubt Yourself, Babe." As a singer, she had major hits with Burt Bacharach's "What the World Needs Now" in 1965 and her own "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" in 1969. In 1975, she co-wrote "Bette Davis Eyes," a major hit for Kim Carnes in 1981. Her best work is collected on The Best of Jackie DeShannon (Rhino, 1991). Dave Dudley Country singer Dave Dudley is known for his truck driving anthems, especially "Six Days on the Road," a huge hit in 1963 that crossed over to the pop Top 40. Gram Parsons and the Flying Burrito Brothers covered this song, which appears on Farther Along (A&M, 1988). Dudley recorded throughout the '60s and '70s, scoring a number one hit with "The Pool Shark" in 1970. Bob Dylan See under Associates of the Byrds.
